Wow. Vivid, alive. How the hell did you learn enough about life in a submarine to write this?

Thanks Jeff. I've been familiar with submarines and how they work since I was a kid. Before writing about the S-4 I visited the library at the Naval Museum in Groton Ct. They have loose-leaf binders with contemporary news reports for every US submarine. I read the reports from 1929, including newspaper accounts from the Boston Globe. All the names and events in this and the other S-4 chapters in Shoal Hope are real as they were. surmised after the sinking. There is also a book about the attempted rescue.
